She is, however, perhaps best remembered for her roles in Born Free (for which she was nominated for a Variety Club Best Actress Award), Ring of Bright Water and Carve Her Name With Pride. Her television appearances include: Romeo and Juliet, The Camomile Lawn and The Deep Blue Sea. On stage Virginia won The Olivier Award and The Society of West End Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Musical, starring opposite Yul Brynner in The King and I.

Virginia has written several books and recorded numerous plays for radio as well as audio books including The Butterfly Lion and Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo and, most recently, An African Love Story by Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Her memoir, The Life in My Years, was published by Oberon Books in 2009 and in 2010 appeared in paperback. Her book of poetry ‘Tonight the Moon is Red’ was published by Muswell Press in 2014. After more than 19 years away from the world of film and theatre, Golden Years – a film she made last year – released April 2016.

She and her husband had 4 children. She has 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Will Travers OBE, Co-Founder and President Born Free Foundation:

Will Travers (born 1958) is an internationally-renowned wildlife expert who has dedicated his life to wildlife issues, since he lived in Kenya while his parents, Virginia McKenna and the late Bill Travers, made the film Born Free (1966). In 1984, he co-founded the wildlife charitable organisation now known as The Born Free Foundation, which works to stop individual wild animal suffering and protect threatened species worldwide. Will is also President of Born Free USA, a national animal advocacy non-profit 501© organisation and is President of the Species Survival Network (SSN), an international coalition of more than 100 organisations committed to the promotion, enhancement and strict enforcement of CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Will has participated in every CITES meeting since 1989 and is regarded as an expert on the precautionary application of Convention.

He has also advised the United Kingdom Government on matters relating to zoos, the use of wild animals in circuses and international wildlife trade. He has been involved in rescuing elephants, tigers, lions and dolphins and is always willing to share his experience and knowledge to further Born Free’s vision for a more compassionate future. Will has appeared on numerous TV and Radio shows, most recently speaking out against canned hunting of lions in the new documentary, Blood Lions. He has travelled to nearly 60 countries worldwide, including over 70 times to Kenya, a country with which he has a special affinity. Will was awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2012 for Services to Conservation and Animal Welfare in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Will has two children: Lily, an actress, and William (‘Wij’) who is at University.

In the very unlikely event, Will Travers or Virginia McKenna be unable to travel, we regret that under no circumstances, a refund can be given. A replacement of the highest and appropriate calibre will be sought to take their place. Other speakers and arrangements may be subject to change. Due to size and nature of lodges all accommodation whilst of a high standard is varied and can be advised at time of booking.

The Born Free Foundation is a dynamic international wildlife charity founded by Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers following their roles in the classic film, ‘Born Free’, along with their eldest son Will. The film’s release some 50 years ago and the story of conservationists George and Joy Adamson’s battle to return Elsa the lioness to a wild and free life, inspired the creation of the charity which is now 32 years old and has over 100 animal welfare and conservation projects around the world. This Safari is a unique opportunity to visit Kenya with Virginia and Will and the BFF team, to see and hear about BFF’s work with wildlife, to share memories of meeting George and Joy Adamson and the filming of Born Free itself, whilst also enjoying the luxury of some extraordinary Lodges in some of Kenya’s most stunning National Parks.
