Pictured here is Athumani, one of the Thanda Island waiters originally from Mafia Island, doing his first scuba lesson in our glass-rimmed pool. As he is one of the shining starts of our island family, Thanda is sponsoring his dive training as part of our community outreach programs.

Guests staying on Thanda Island have the ability to get dive certified as well, through our partner, Mafia Island Diving, Ltd.! Mafia Island Diving is the only PADI 5-star dive center on nearby Mafia Island. They are an experienced, professional company with the ability to teach in six languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, and Swahili. All Thanda Island guests diving with Mafia Island Diving are placed on private, authentic Arab dhows with personal instructors; our guests never share classes or boats with other people.

Through Mafia Island Diving we can offer DSD shore dives (single and double), an open water and advanced water course, and various other diving opportunities. The DSD double dive is the most popular for diving on the Thanda side, versus going to Mafia. And, for those wanting to get certified, we offer a Thanda/Mafia Open Water Course with all training done on Thanda Island and one final dive on Mafia Island, with all gear, boat and car transfers, park fees, and instructor teaching included, for USD $1,413 per person, though the cost per person goes down the more participants sign up to do the package together. The majority of the Mafia Island and Thanda Island dive sites are not deeper than 18 meters, making them the perfect reefs for all ages and experience levels to explore.

For the Mafia Island dives, all dives are done in the Mafia Island Marine Park, which includes nine islands and is widely regarded as having the most spectacular reefs for diving and snorkeling in sub-Saharan Africa. As the largest marine protected area in the Indian Ocean, it includes an intriguing diversity of coral reefs, five species of turtles, and 400 species of enchanting reef fish. It is a rich breeding ground for pelagic fish such as the baracuda, stingray, napoleon wrasse, and large grouper. Outside of Chole Bay a choice of equally exciting dives are available, including eleven reefs within reach of Ras Mbisi, Mafia Island. The beauty of Chole Bay is that because it is a well-protected bay, you can dive here all year-round. Three of our favorite reefs are: Kinasi Pass (a 5-star rated dive), Milimani Coral Gardens, and Chole Wall.
