With Malawi recently included as the only African destination in leading travel trade body ABTA’s ‘Destinations to Watch in 2025’, this looks to be another year of growth for the fast emerging ‘Warm Heart of Africa’. In a series of articles, we’re taking a look at some of the developments from 2024 and plans for 2025 that underpin this upward trajectory. In the second instalment, we shared developments in Liwonde National Park which you can see here. In this third instalment, we take a look at what’s been happening and what’s yet to come in the capital city of Lilongwe.
Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi, continues to flourish as a vibrant hub of culture, conservation, and tourism. With substantial advancements made in 2024 and ambitious plans set for 2025, the city is becoming a beacon of sustainable development and exceptional experiences for locals and visitors alike. Here is a detailed look at the developments across key sectors.
Lilongwe Wildlife Trust
The Lilongwe Wildlife Trust made significant strides in 2024 to enhance visitor engagement and promote environmental education. The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre saw the completion of its forest boardwalk, a structure made largely from recycled materials that offers a unique elevated perspective of the forest canopy and Lingadzi River. This innovative addition includes interactive learning stations, games, a selfie stand, and a separate “kids boardwalk” designed for safe exploration by younger visitors.
Membership programs were also introduced, allowing for streamlined access and additional benefits such as early entry. The newly launched “Field Guide to Adventure” booklet has provided families with endless fun while exploring the forest. Navigation has been improved with updated trail maps and signage, while fitness enthusiasts can enjoy the newly established forest gym along the blue trail. Additionally, the Wildlife Trust continued its placements for volunteers, students, and researchers, offering opportunities in sanctuary work, veterinary medicine, and wildlife monitoring in Liwonde National Park.
Looking forward to 2025, the Trust aims to upgrade its volunteer house, ensuring greater comfort for participants. The introduction of the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre Audio Tour will allow visitors to explore key highlights of the Centre at their own pace, while guided tours will also be available through pre-booking. An updated events calendar promises a range of activities, including yoga sessions, bird walks, family days, and cycle races. Renovations to the open-air meeting room will enhance its functionality, making it an ideal space for group gatherings while maintaining views of the surrounding forest.
Kumbali Country Lodge
Marking its 20th anniversary in hospitality, Kumbali Country Lodge underwent a transformative year in 2024. The lodge refreshed its accommodations with vibrant colour schemes, combining a modern aesthetic with its renowned warmth and tranquillity. Enhancements extended to the lodge’s new game farm, where new wildlife—including zebras, sable antelopes, ostriches, and wildebeest—joined the existing conservation efforts. This expansion provides guests with an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature.
A significant addition to Kumbali’s offerings is the Kumbali Castle, a stunning events venue crafted entirely by hand using locally sourced materials, including bricks produced on-site. The castle stands as a symbol of dedication and craftsmanship. Furthermore, Nature’s Gift Bananas expanded its banana farm within the Kumbali Estate, adding a new 25-hectare plantation to complement the existing 28-hectare farm. With over 60,000 banana plants of the Williams variety, this initiative reduces reliance on imports, supports local vendors, and enhances food security in Malawi.
Ulendo Travel Group
In 2024, Ulendo expanded its presence in Lilongwe by opening the Green Elephant guest house and a new office at the same location. This development reflects Ulendo’s commitment to providing quality accommodations and services in the region. Plans for 2025 include the addition of another room to the Green Elephant, as well as continued staff development initiatives to enhance the guest experience.
1 2 Travel Africa
The year 2024 marked the revival of the Safari Bookings Office at Mitengo House by 1 2 Travel Africa, bringing back guided Lilongwe City Tours that highlight the city’s charm and cultural heritage. Looking ahead to 2025, the Vine Restaurant at Mitengo House is set to open its doors to day visitors, offering a delightful dining experience in a serene setting. Plans also include refurbishing bathrooms at Africa House to meet the expectations of modern travellers and introducing bi-monthly day trips to Kuti Wildlife Reserve for horse riding adventures.
A Bright Future for Lilongwe
The numerous initiatives undertaken in 2024 and those planned for 2025 reflect Lilongwe’s dynamic growth and commitment to sustainability, conservation, and hospitality. From wildlife conservation and eco-friendly tourism to innovative hospitality offerings, Lilongwe is poised to remain a key hub in Malawi. Whether exploring the elevated forest canopy, enjoying the modernized accommodations, or embarking on a fascinating city or wildlife tour, visitors are guaranteed memorable experiences that celebrate the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
