WHAT: APTA in partnership with Zambezi Elephant Fund invites all our members to join them for an evening to learn about the ongoing efforts to conserve and protect the Middle-Zambezi Biosphere Reserve and its wildlife.
ABOUT
The Zambezi Valley of Zimbabwe encompasses a World Heritage Site and is one of the longest contiguous wilderness area in Southern Africa. It is also home to one of Africa’s remaining elephant strongholds. Over the years however, and since 2001, the valley has lost 40% of its elephant population. In 2016 alone, the Zambezi Valley lost one elephant every four days to poaching.
Since its inception in 2015, the Zambezi Elephant Fund and its partners have helped Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority to contain the current crisis. Richard Maasdorp will present on the existing work being carried out by our implementing partners and will showcase how these incredible “pockets of passion” continue to strive to ensure the long term protection of the Zambezi Valley and it’s elephants.
A Special presentation will also be given by Chief Chundu’s wife Portia Kakamba on how tourism and conservation organisations can assist in her valiant efforts to support disadvantaged children and that it is through creating awareness in the younger generations that we may be able to successfully break through to ensure the protection of our wild areas. In addition, a small team from Afro Jumbo Trust, a local Zimbabwean fashion house who through their fashion creations have demonstrated how fashion can be used as a medium to communicate to younger generations on the need for greater involvement in Elephant Conservation initiatives, will also be present with us on the evening.
