Cape Town – Table Mountain Cableway will be closed from Monday 27 July to Sunday 9 August for the scheduled annual maintenance.
The annual maintenance is carried out with the help of a team of Swiss engineers, in order to meet the highest global cableway standards set by the Swiss Governing Body for Cableways (BAV) and to ensure that the best safety measures are met and maintained.
The visiting Swiss team is assisted by Cableway’s very own technical staff, some of whom have undergone training in Switzerland to comply with the strict standards set by the BAV.
This year’s work includes cleaning the ropes, slack rope tests, renewing switches and bearings where necessary and servicing the main gearbox, generators and backup generators. In addition, general electronic component changes and control checks are carried out and the cable-car cabins will also undergo a facelift.
“This year’s maintenance will also include a haul rope change,” says the Cableway’s Technical Manager, Gaziem du Toit. “This is done approximately every 5 years.”
Cableway specials will still be on offer before and after the annual maintenance period. These include a free return ticket for adults on their birthdays on presentation of a South African ID. The Kidz Season Special, valid over weekends, public and school holidays until 31 October, offers two children under 18 years a free return trip, if they are accompanied by a full-paying adult.
If you celebrate your birthday during the closure period, your complimentary Cableway birthday ticket will be waiting for you to redeem either one week before (19 July – 26 July) or one week after (10 August – 17 August) maintenance.
