Zambia’s Flatdogs Camp in South Luangwa National Park has been awarded Fair Trade Tourism Certification by Fair Trade Tourism, South Africa. South Luangwa National Park is one of Zambia’s 20 National Parks, covering a vast area measuring 9,050 square kilometers, with a huge concentration of wildlife. The park is also birthplace of Africa’s walking safari. It is home to elephants, Giraffes, Hippos, Lions, Cheetah, buffalo and large number of antelope, waterbuck and other large species. The Thornicroft’s Giraffes and Cookson’s wildebeest are unique to the Luangwa valley.
Flatdogs Camp is the first lodge in Zambia to receive the Fair-Trade Tourism Certification. This certification recognizes the camps contribution to minimizing the impact on the environment and maximizing their positive impact on the community. The Fair-Trade Tourism Certification is a mark of best practice in responsible and Fair-Trade Tourism, defined by fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing and operations, equitable distribution of benefits, and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. In addition, the certification recognizes that the people who contribute their land, resources, labor and knowledge to tourism are the ones reaping the benefits, and that the natural environment on which it all depends is treated with respect in pursuit of more resilient destinations.
