Today, the Association for the Promotion of Tourism to Africa (APTA) announces the departure of Cheryle Velsor from her position as Executive Director. Cheryle has led APTA with distinction and dedication, extending her term beyond its expiration to support the association through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. As she transitions into semi-retirement to focus on personal priorities, her leadership and profound commitment to APTA’s mission will be profoundly missed.
Cheryle reflected on her tenure, stating, “It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve on the APTA Executive Board. While stepping back, I remain committed to supporting APTA’s mission and look forward to staying connected with the APTA family.”
Stepping into the role of Interim Executive Director is Jessie Tate, who has been a part of the APTA community prior to joining the Executive Board in 2019. With over a decade of experience in the travel industry, Jessie previously collaborated with Jane Behrend at Emerging Destinations and most recently joined the Singita family in October 2022. Jessie’s passion for Africa was ignited during a transformative visit to South Africa in 2014.
Jessie expressed her enthusiasm for her new role, saying, “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to lead APTA during this transition. I look forward to continuing the excellent work Cheryle has done and to contributing to APTA’s mission in new ways. I am here to address any questions, comments, or concerns from our members and partners.”
APTA thanks Cheryle for her invaluable contributions and wishes her all the best in her journey to retirement. The association also looks forward to a new chapter of leadership under Jessie Tate’s direction as it continues to promote tourism to Africa.
