Through the Kenya Metrological Department (KMD) warning on continuous heavy
downpour experienced in various parts of Kenya, the Kenya Tourism Federation Safety
and Communication Centre has been on alert monitoring the situations around the
country and advising accordingly. The heavy rainfall has led to flooding, landslides and
overflowing of rivers resulting in loss of lives, livelihoods and damage to properties.
The Government has advised residents and tourists to be vigilant on the current situation
and to avoid driving, walking in any flooded areas.
KTF – Safety Centre will offer continuous updates to members on the current situation
around the country through social media platforms and Safety – Centre WhatsApp group.
Current Situation as at 3rd May 2024.
Nairobi National Park:
Roads are passable; however, use of four-wheel vehicles is encouraged as these are
suited for the such road conditions.
Masai Mara National Reserve:
The Reserve has been adversely affected by the heavy rains leading to stakeholders
meeting to explore ways of mitigating the situation. Currently, several Camps along Talek
River are not accessible, but Lodges and Camps around Sekenani area are accessible.
The use of 4×4 vehicles is highly recommended for any planned safaris.
Amboseli National Park:
The roads are passable and no rains have been experienced for the last 3 days. The area
remains under observation.
Tsavo East National Park:
The area has experienced minimal rains and the park is accessible.
Tsavo West National Park:
All roads leading to the park are accessible. People are encouraged to continue with
their planned safaris
Samburu/Shaba National Reserves:
All lodges and camps are currently accessible. The Shaba area remains under
observation in view of past events with the Ewaso Nyiro river overflows.
The KTF-Safety & Communication Centre (SCC) wishes to remind esteemed members to
adhere to stipulated instructions in the event of encountering a “flood warning”, and
seek safety grounds until the floods subside and the water clears. Additionally, the KTF –
Safety Centre can be contacted for early warning update situation reports. Of
IMPORTANCE is to note that that the rain situation is very fluid, and people should be very
watchful of sudden flash floods, erosion, and pools formation on roads and highways.
The Safety & Communication Centre is also monitoring closely the Meteorological
