Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, Sierra Leone continues to make remarkable strides in the aviation sector, attracting foreign investments that have led to the development of an ultra-modern international airport and a notable increase in flight frequencies to 50 per week. Today, Sierra Leone marks another significant milestone with the launch of its new flag carrier airline, Air Sierra Leone.
Air Sierra Leone Overview
Though not a national carrier, Air Sierra Leone will serve as the country’s flag carrier, offering regional and international flights. Operations are set to commence on December 2, 2024, with inaugural routes connecting Freetown to key West African cities including Abidjan, Accra, Monrovia, Banjul, Dakar, and Conakry, alongside direct flights to Gatwick Airport in London.
Flight Routes and Schedule
Air Sierra Leone will operate three weekly flights to and from London Gatwick, providing convenient connections for business travelers, tourists, and the Sierra Leonean diaspora.
- From Freetown to Gatwick: Departures on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and
Saturdays at 10:40 AM. - From Gatwick to Freetown: Departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays at 10:00 PM.
Aircraft Capacity and Ticket Prices
The London route will be serviced by a Boeing 737 Max 8, a modern aircraft less than two years old, ensuring safety and comfort for all passengers. The airline will offer a special promotional fare of $750 for the maiden flight, with regular tickets priced at $999. Three cabin configurations will be available, offering 50, 149, and 189 seats.
Advancements in Regulatory Compliance
With the introduction of a new flight registration system and the availability of Airline Operating Certificates (AOC), Sierra Leone is taking vital steps towards removing the country from the European aviation blacklist, a designation it has held since 2008.
Economic Impact: Job Creation and Cultural Representation
Air Sierra Leone is committed to creating employment opportunities for Sierra Leoneans, from cabin crew to administrative positions in Freetown. The airline will provide training to ensure its staff meets global standards. In a nod to Sierra Leonean culture, passengers will be able to enjoy traditional local cuisine such as cassava leaves and rice during their flights.
Leadership and Expertise
The airline is led by CEO Emmanuel Iza, with technical support provided by Xejet Limited, a Nigerian aviation firm known for its industry expertise.
