While many African countries claim to be a birdwatcher’s paradise, Malawi’s credentials are particularly impressive. The country is a birder’s paradise. Few places in Africa can rival Malawi’s range of bird species, combined with the accessibility of its birdwatching. Around 650 different species have been identified here, with 10% seen nowhere else in southern Africa. Malawi is hands down one of the best countries for birding safaris in Africa.
Why Malawi is so Good for Birding
1. Malawi’s geographic and climatic diversity, from the high Afro-montane climate at Nyika Plateau, to the lush wooded Liwonde National Park, and the open expanses of Lake Malawi all combine to make the country a great bird-watching destination.
2. Lake Malawi covers over 20% of the country and attracts a wide variety of waterbirds.
3. Plateaus, mountains, wetlands and lakes all co-exist in this relatively small country, offering a wide variety of bird habitats, without having to travel too far.
4. Malawi’s warm sub-tropical climate attracts northern migratory birds flying south in the winter (African summer).
