Issued 30 September 2025, the SADC Tourism Alliance, Africa’s Eden, and SATSA have released a joint update on the situation in Madagascar following recent civil unrest. While demonstrations have taken place in some urban areas, the country’s key tourism destinations remain open, operational, and unaffected.
Tourism operations
The Confédération du Tourisme de Madagascar (CTM) confirms that tourism services across the country continue largely without disruption:
-
All airports remain operational.
-
Ground transport and international carriers have adjusted schedules to avoid curfew hours.
-
All national parks and circuits outside urban centres continue operating normally.
-
Fuel supplies and banking services remain available, though with some local restrictions.
Groups currently travelling in Madagascar’s traditional tourism circuits have maintained their itineraries with minimal adjustments. Hotels, tour operators, and guides confirm no direct impact on clients, and the sector’s safety record remains intact.
Looking ahead
Madagascar’s tourism sector has weathered challenges before, showing resilience and the ability to adapt quickly. CTM’s 24-hour crisis management unit continues to coordinate with operators, authorities, and security forces to ensure visitor safety and minimise disruption.
Africa’s Eden, SATSA, and the SADC Tourism Alliance call for a swift, peaceful resolution to the unrest, recognising the vital role tourism plays in Madagascar’s economy and local livelihoods. The organisations remain committed to supporting regional partners through open communication, factual updates, and coordinated action.
Updates will continue to be shared with the trade as new information becomes available.
