Phil is PNW APTA Board Member and Chair for Responsible Tourism and Conservation. Phil has spent most of his adult life living and working deep in Africa’s wild places, guiding, managing, and training in some of the continent’s largest and most remote game reserves.
A professional naturalist safari guide, Phil has led guests on foot, by vehicle, and by boat across Southern and Eastern Africa, blending wildlife expertise with real-world insights into safety, conservation, and unforgettable safari experiences, from rustic bush camps to ultra-luxury lodges.
As part of our Understanding Africa series, Phil tackles one of the most frequently asked, and most misunderstood, questions from travel advisors: Is Africa safe? The answer is more nuanced (and reassuring) than the headlines suggest.
In the second half of the presentation, Phil breaks down accommodations from rustic to exotic, helping you clearly understand the differences so you can confidently match the right experience to the right client, and manage expectations like the professional you are.
