The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) wishes to inform all tourism stakeholders, including tour operators, guides, and drivers, that we are receiving alarming reports of severe flooding in Serengeti, where several vehicles have already been swept away by flood waters and there are reports of people missing.
It is extremely concerning that some drivers are still attempting to cross flooded rivers and roads while carrying guests, which puts lives at serious risk.
TATO strongly urges all operators, guides, and drivers to avoid crossing flooded areas under any circumstances. No itinerary, lodge transfer, schedule, or financial incentive is worth risking the lives of guests, drivers, or guides.
If a road is flooded, operators and guides are advised to turn back, wait for water levels to subside, or coordinate with lodges and other operators to arrange safe alternatives. The safety of guests and guides must remain the highest priority at all times.
As an industry, we must act responsibly and take precautionary measures to prevent avoidable tragedies.
We kindly request that this notice be shared immediately with all guides and drivers currently operating in Serengeti.
