Fishermans Rest, an organisation in Malawi that do excellent work in local communities, whilst also running a lodge and a range of cultural activities for guests, have proudly been awarded The Future Generations Award by Hub Cymru Africa at the 2023 Partnership Awards.

2023 has been a monumental year for FROM Wales and FRCP in Malawi and their work is being recognised by multiple different organisations. They are dedicated to building community in Malawi, to work with each other, not for each other.

Fisherman’s Rest are delighted by the news of the award, with Beth from the Fisherman’s Rest team sharing what makes them unique.

“Our working model is unique, because it has no end date and no leaving point. Yes, we set goals, we end projects, we start new projects, we pivot and change according to needs. But we are still together, working in partnership to see an economic and educational change in Blantyre “Rural, that will not only change a community now, but also for generations to come.”

Hub Cybru made an announcement following the award being presented to Fisherman’s Rest.

The Future Generations Award has been won by FROM Wales, Haverfordwest, and Fisherman’s Rest Community Projects (FRCP), Blantyre, Malawi. This award is interested in how partnerships embrace the spirit of the Well-being of Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015. FRCP has supported communities in southern Malawi for 30 years, responding to practical concerns raised at grassroots level. FROM Wales was established in 2012 to support the work of FRCP through a shared vision and equitable decision-making, including on funding, initiation of projects and overall governance. The FRCP board of trustees consists of two Welsh residents and three Malawian residents. Together, they lead on projects involving tree-planting, water infrastructure, education and women’s empowerment.”

For nearly twenty five years Fisherman’s Rest has been working alongside neighbouring communities in schools and villages. Today, it’s a thriving not-for-profit Lodge and Nature Reserve and NGO, the largest employer in the surrounding area and the wider the local community. And now, an award-winning organisation!
