Bats have started arriving in the Kasanka National Park in Central Province of Zambia. The “World largest Mammal Migration”- The Bat Migration takes place in Kasanka National Park which is located in the South of the Bangweulu Wetlands in Serenje District. It is one of the 20 National Parks in Zambia with a size of 420km square. It has a rich sanctuary of wildlife, birdlife, flora and fauna. The park also has over 420 species of birds making the national park an ideal destination for bird watchers too.

Every year from mid-October to December between 8 -10 million straw-colored bats migrate from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) into “Mushitu” swamp forest of the Kasanka National Park which they temporarily make their habitat as they come through to settle around the trees to feed on a variety of wild fruits which are in abundance in the area during this time of the year.

As early as 4 – 5 am in the morning before sunrise, millions of bats cover the sky. At sunset, the bats fly over in huge numbers from the trees for forage. It is such a spectacular site to see during this time of the year!

To see this spectacular view, one has to use a 60 ft high hide in a treetop.
